Frequently Asked Questions

How do the bike rentals work?

The bike rental is free, but we take a $100 cash deposit from you. We hand the $100 back to you when you return the bike. The first time you rent a bike, we have you show us your TCard and fill out a rental contract.

We lend bikes for up to two weeks in total.

After 1 week, you must come back to Bikechain and check in with us to renew the bike for a second week. Late returns are subject to fees.

Our lending program is available during any of our regular shop hours. You cannot return a bike while we are closed.

After you’ve had your rental bike for 2 weeks, you will have a 1 week “cool down” period before you can rent it again, so other students can have a turn. After your cool down period, you can repeat this process as many times as you like. There’s no limit to the number of times you can rent a bike per year.

Yes! We provide a lock and lights. Please don’t lose them, or else you will have to replace them.

No. For safety and hygiene reasons, we do not lend out helmets. However, we highly recommend wearing one. You can buy a helmet at Bikechain.

Some of our lending bikes use coaster brakes (also known as pedal brakes). These are similar to the bikes many people rode as children. You engage the brakes by pedalling backwards. These help us keep repairs to a minimum, which helps keeps more bikes on the road in our lending program. If you’re less familiar with coaster brakes, not to fear: all of our bikes have at least one handlebar brake as well.

Bike lending is only offered to current U of T students because this program is supported by U of T student tuition fees. However, all of Bikechain’s other programming is open to all!

Unfortunately no. We accept deposits by cash only.
